As I finish out my senior year I've taken a lot of time to reflect upon my high school experience. As I've reflected some of the most important and defining moments stick out in my head that have helped shape me into the person that I am today. When I took broadcast technology my sophomore year I had no idea that it would inspire me to further pursue film. I wanted to tell others stories in a creative way and this class opened me up to discover what I could create. This year I started to do more creative productions and I was able to apply what I learned to my other classes and cultivate my skills. With the help of my peers and instructors I was able to create a short film, a goal I had since I first started to class. I wish I was able to take this class for longer than an year but, I'm grateful for the people I've met, the things I've learned and the teachers that have helped support me through out my journey as a broadcast student. My advice for an incoming student would be to learn as much as you can and enjoy what you do because time will go by fast. Thank you Mr. Goble and Mrs. Davidson for supporting me and teaching me so much through out the year. I won't forget everything you've taught me.

For this months video I decided to film a Winter lookbook. A lookbook is when you feature different outfits so other people can gain inspiration to create their own. When I was thinking of video ideas for this month I knew that I wanted to create a video that was more creative than journalistic. One of my favorite youtubers use to make lookbooks and I loved how he edited them together using a lot of different effects to create a unique video. I rewatched a few of his videos to use as inspiration for my own and decided from there how I wanted to film my video. I knew that I wanted my shots to have motion so I used a steady camera to create fluid motion. It was the first time that I'd used the steady cam and at first it was hard to get it to move where I wanted but after a while I was able to figure it out. My favorite part of creating this video was the editing process because I was able to use a variety of effects and I made them my own by using different amounts and by layering them.
This month I accomplished one of my goals for the semester. I produced a video for HEC-TV for the month of January about art inspiring others. I was given the clips that a student from the previous semester captured and I arranged them, added music and recorded a voice over from the subject. I like the way I organized the clips that I was given because It matched up with what she was saying. I used the show and tell method to match up what she said with the clips that I showed to make the video flow and make more since. I also helped work on the show opening for this years ladue view. We filmed for two days and then edited for two more days. I really like the way our opening came out because we were able to find a way to include everyone despite our class being bigger this semester than last semester. My favorite part of making the intro was the editing process because we played around with the different speeds of everyone's clips and the transitions at the end of the video.
This is my last semester in broadcast technology and I'm very excited to start making videos for the new year. This year I want to make another short film and explore the different creative videos that I can make. I also want to submit a video for HEC Media and create at least one video that is more journalistic than creative. One of the video's that I want to create this semester is a look book where I would use different effects on a model to show what they're wearing. I haven't made a video that's more journalistic since Broadcast 1 and I think it would be really cool to make another video like that. For the new year I'm really excited to broaden my horizons and create videos that I've never thought of doing before.
For our final project we recorded for the first time in a year in the new studio. Filming Ladue View was a completely new experience for me because I've never worked in the studio before. This year I learned how to operate the new studio like using the AJA, teleprompter, and the broadcast cameras. During the show I was the technical director operating the tech board and it was a little intimidating at first learning how to operate it because I'd never done it before but, the more I did it the more comfortable I felt. I had a lot of fun this semester and got the change to create new content that I'm really proud of. I also got a chance to explore the effects in Final Cut Pro and the importance of a wide range of shots when filming. I faced some challenges this semester like correcting audio in the editing process and being cognizant about composition while filming. I excited to start next semester using the skills that I've learned and to create more content.
This week I finished editing my short film Commercial Break. Before I started editing I was worried that I didn't get enough shots for the project but I got everything I needed and had extra shots to work with after I had added in everything. I'm very happy about how my project turned out especially because it was my first time working on a short film. Over the course of two days to capture audio I used a boom pole and the second day I used mics on everyone. That made it harder during the editing process to make sure that the audio levels were consistent and that it all sounded the same. The boom pole captured more background noise and the actors didn't sound as clear than when they had the mic on. I was able to cover it up during the editing process by replacing some of the audio taken on the boom pole by replacing it with the audio taken on the mic the second day we filmed. If I could go back and change how I captured audio I would be more consistent with using mics on everyone both days instead of only one day. Overall I'm very proud of how my first short film turned out and I look forward to doing more projects similar to this.
After finishing revising my script and filming I'm ready to start the editing process for Commercial Break. I started filming last week on Tuesday and Friday after school and I was able to finish filming in two days. I used two cameras and rotated them around to get a variety of shots for each page. I'm excited to start editing because I looked at a lot of different short film and used ISM Film to help me with this project and it gave me a lot of information about how to set up different shots and how to edit. This is my first time making a short film or even doing a project this long and I'm worried that I might've forgotten to get a certain shot or that the audio might not sound as good. On Tuesday I ran into trouble picking up sound on the boom pole but I was able to get the mic close enough to the actors without it interfering with the shot. I'm excited to see how my project and the editing process turns out.
For my next video I'm making a short film. The film is about a team of people coming up with ideas for a commercial for a perfume company. A former Ladue student wrote the script and I'm really excited to start filming because I think the script is really funny and I have a lot of ideas about how I can film it to make it funny. I'm getting some of the actors from the theater department to act in the film and I plan on using one of the new conference room in our school to use as the setting. I'm planning on using two cameras to record and then filming the scene multiple times to get different angles like a close up of the person talking and the reaction of the people who are listening and then a wide shot of everyone in the room. I'm also planning on starting to film as soon a possible so I can start editing and putting it all together. I'm excited and nervous because I've never made a video as long as this or worked on a short film.
For my first project I worked with a a partner to create a hype video for the football team to get excited for the 2018 season. This video was really challenging for us because we weren't able to get enough footage and get close enough shots so we could see the plays clearly. It was also hard editing the video because we didn't get enough footage or people were in the way of the shot. We did get a chance to use a lot of effects and made it a fun video. That was the first time editing in a while for me so it gave me a chance to see the different things that I could do with Final Cut Pro and it got me reacquainted with editing. Next time I would make sure that we were close enough to the field or whoever the subject of the video is and that we have enough footage to have a variety of shots. Overall I really enjoyed making this video because it was more creative and fun.
I took this class a few years ago and I really liked being able to create content and the freedom that we had with choosing the projects we worked on. This year I want to make more creative content like music videos, short films and studio production. I also want to explore what else I can do with journalism and film. I think doing something with HEC-TV would be really cool to explore what interests me and to experience the work it takes to make a news package. I'm excited to start working on different projects and see what content I can make with the new studio. I want to study communications in college so I want to create skills that I can carry on with me. |
